Microsoft just announced the Surface 2, the successor to the original Surface RT tablet. So of course, we did exactly what any self-respecting Engadget editors would do: we muscled our way to the front of the demo area and made sure we were the first to get our hands on it. If you're new to the whole Surface thing, and just thinking of getting your first Windows tablet, you'll probably be able to appreciate how thin and light the Surface 2 is. But you'll probably appreciate it even more if you own one of the first-gen models: any human being with muscle memory should be able to recognize that there's simply less tablet here than there used to be. We didn't need to do a side-by-side comparison with the original to notice how much lighter the tablet has gotten; it's easier to hold and feels less bulky too. All told, the new model weighs 676 grams (1.49 pounds) and measures 8.9mm (0.35 inch), down from about 1.5 pounds and 0.37 inch thick.
